Statue of Kal Bhairav

Hanuman Dhoka Rd, Kathmandu 44600, Nepal

Description:

The statue of Kal Bhairav, the destroying god, created in the 17th century, still plays a special role in the life of the country and is one of the largest statues of its time. It is located in the historic Durbar Square, near the Jagannath Temple.

The stone statue is a huge black sculpture of a six-armed deity dressed in a necklace of skulls and snake earrings and trampling an evil demon with his feet. Kal Bhairav is a destructive projection of Shiva, and his image is associated with a violation of existing social and religious norms.

It is believed that anyone who lies in front of the statue of Bhairav will immediately bleed to death. Therefore, to this day, it is here that civil servants are sworn in, and the accused are justified and assert their innocence.
