Highland Langtang Valley
Langtang Padmaarga, Langtang National Park, 45,000, Nepal
Description:
The Langtang Valley is located in northern Nepal near the border with Tibet. It borders the main Himalaya region in the north and the region of lower snow peaks in the south.
Mount Langtang Lirung (7246 meters) dominates the north of the valley. Gang Chengpo (6388 meters) and Nia Kangri (5846 meters) are located in the south, from the east the valley is closed by Dorye Lakra (6966 meters).
Langtang is Nepal’s first national park. It was organized in 1971. This mountainous and isolated valley is inhabited by the Tamang people, whose religious customs, dress and language are more like Tibetan than Nepalese.
According to legend, the valley was opened by the Lama, who pursued the escaped yak. Hence the name of the valley: Lang - in Tibetan "yak", Tang (Dhang) - "follow". The yaks have been living in the valley ever since.
In the Langtang area there are wonderful conditions for mountain travel. In the mountains at an altitude of 3400 meters is the sacred lake Gosainkund, which is the site of mass pilgrimage of Hindus during the festival of the Full Moon in August.
