Don’t be afraid, this is not a prophecy of the Apocalypse, but a new LAN - 3-car train, specially developed by the St. Petersburg tram plant for the Volgograd metrotram.
The idea of creating a high-speed tram appeared in the 70s. The construction of the first stage of the northern branch was started in 1976 by specialists of Kharkivmetrostroy. Its grand opening took place on November 5, 1984. volgograd He received a new type of transport, which has no analogues in Russia so far. The high-speed tram is a hybrid of tram and subway, hence the name "metrotram".
The length of the first stage (northern branch) is 13.5 km and has 19 operating stations, 3 of which are underground, made according to metro standards, but adapted for the operation of the tram.
In 1985, the construction of the 2nd stage (southern branch) of the metrotram with three underground stations was started. By 1992, it was 80% complete, but, unfortunately, the funding was frozen, and all these years the southern branch remained long-term.
Several years ago, at the Federal level, it was decided to “finish the facilities of the highest degree of readiness”, including the 2nd stage of the Volgograd metrotram.
The launch date of the southern branch is set for December 1, 2011.
