Airfare fraud may become one of the most frequent types of deception of Russian travelers in the summer of 2021. This forecast was made on February 20 by the first deputy director of the information security department of the Central Bank Artem Sychev.

According to the expert, for the high tourist season, it is worth waiting for the restoration of air traffic in many directions. Attackers will not fail to take advantage of this opportunity to become active in the air ticket market. Possible options are selling seats on non-existent flights or spreading fake airline websites.

" . Growth depends on the demand for a particular direction and the time of its opening. Enhanced advertising of one of them can lead to an increase in the attention of attackers to the route, Artem Sychev explained. Airlines often sell out during a pandemic. In this way, they try to ensure at least minimum occupancy of aircraft. However, tourists should be careful if they are offered such promotions immediately after the resumption of flights to a particular country. In addition, it is necessary to double-check the information on the relevance of flights. Tourists should not be deceived and wishful thinking.

“When there is a situation with clearly cheap tickets or flights that are not confirmed anywhere else on other sites, it is one indicator that fraudsters are working against you. Their main purpose is to obtain the data of your payment instruments.”

Fraudster carders, who lure Russians with giant discounts on hotels and airline tickets, but pay for reservations with stolen plastic cards, have long been active in the domestic market. Previously, they searched for victims in Instagram and Vkontakte, but with the onset of the pandemic coronavirus infection mastered Telegram.

Buying tickets from such scammers will threaten the traveler with loss of money and problems with the police. In January, the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation reported cases of fraud related to the sale of fake PCR test results and fake vaccines against COVID-19. Since the beginning of 2021, 1,112 such cases have been identified.
