Vietnam to open Phu Quoc Island to foreigners
Prime Minister Vietnam Pham Minh Chin believes that 2-3 million foreign travelers will visit the island by the end of 2021.
It is assumed that the test period of the pilot project will last six months from October 2021.
Visit the island will be able to holders of vaccination certificates (“Satellite V” approved) against coronavirus (full vaccination must be completed 14 days before the visit, but not earlier than a year before arrival to the island), as well as tourists who have had coronavirus (not earlier than 12 months before arrival).
Tourists will need a negative PCR test result.
Tourists will be able to fly to the resort island by charter and regular flights. Vietnamese airlines said they were ready to fly to Phu Quoc.
The vaccination rate on the island has not yet reached 70%. The total population of the island is 144 thousand people, but only 38 thousand people are vaccinated with at least one dose, i.e. only about 26%.
The pilot project in Fukuoka is needed to restore Vietnam’s economy after the coronavirus epidemic.
According to him, the protracted pandemic has caused serious damage to the tourism industry of the country. The number of foreign tourists arriving in Vietnam has fallen from 18 million in 2019, when tourism revenue was $31 billion, or nearly 12% of its gross domestic product, to 3.8 million in 2020.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chin, speaking at a cabinet meeting on September 6, expressed hope that if the program to open Fukuoka to vaccinated tourists is successfully implemented, 2-3 million foreign tourists will be able to rest on the island until the end of 2021.
Experts of the domestic travel market suggest that it is impossible to talk about the mass return of Russians to the Vietnamese resort until at least there are flights from Russia to Vietnam. Air traffic between our countries was formally restored by the Operator.
“So far, there is no understanding either on the timing of the opening of flights, or on the plans of Russian carriers, or in general on what will be the rest on the island after its opening, what will change for tourists.”
