A trip to the Alkmar cheese fair
Description:
alkmar
The first mention of the city was documented in the 10th century. The city is widely known for its huge cheese fair, which began in 1622.
The Cheese Fair is the pride of the Alkmarans. They mainly sell farm cheeses. Alkmar is the only city in the world that has preserved the guild of cheese porters and the ancient traditions of cheese fairs of the Middle Ages. Before the First World War, fairs were held several times a week in Alkmaar, which lasted until one o'clock in the morning. Now in Alkmaar fairs are held from April to October on Fridays.
The fair begins with the ringing of bells at 10:00 and lasts 2-3 hours.
The road to the main street of the city passes by the original Hof von Sonoy tower. Below is a beautiful building in the style of late Gothic with a tower - the building of the city hall. Nearby are several houses of the 18th century, including Huize Egmont, built in 1742 - the house of the mayor.
