Mauderslot Castle: an impregnable fortress

Mowderslot is rightly called the best preserved medieval castle in the Netherlands. Initially, a very simple fortress (four thick walls, corner towers and a moat) eventually turned into a Castle, impressive skill of medieval builders and thoughtful defense. Such a stronghold could be captured only by a very powerful enemy. This castle is preserved: not a palace, but a fortress.

As befits a medieval citadel, its walls store memories of tragic events that occurred hundreds of years ago. By order of Count Floris V, this castle was erected, and here (ironically!) the captured count spent the last days of his life. We will walk through the count's chambers, look into the dungeon, the herald room, the castle chapel, observation and guard rooms. You will learn what it meant to be a knight, and whether it was so romantic to live in the castle at that time. In the Arms Hall we will see an impressive collection of medieval weapons and armor. Imagine a real 10th century Viking sword! I wonder what he would tell us if he could tell us his story. And in the attic we will suddenly see a mermaid! How does it relate to the history of the town of Mauden, which is located under the walls of the castle? An old legend will tell us about this.

And finally, we will have the opportunity to explore the interiors of the castle, which date back to the seventeenth century – the Golden Age for Holland.
