Aude Kirk - The Old Church
1012 Amsterdam, Netherlands, Oudekerksplein 23
Description:
On the territory of Amsterdam is the oldest church of Aude Kerk. The temple was founded in 1306 and is located in a famous area of the city - DeWallen (red light district). The history of the church knows that the children of the famous Rembrandt were baptized here and his wife, Saskia, was buried here.
The church covers a huge area of 3300 square meters. The foundation of the temple was laid on a hill, because because of the marshy terrain, it was considered the most durable foundation. Each of the past 15 generations has made its own additions and changes to the general features of the temple.
The architecture of the church combined the spirit of Gothic and Renaissance. The church building resembles the outline of a cross, and the wooden roof is large in size. Such a huge vaulted roof is not found throughout Europe. Estonian wood was used as a finish, so excellent acoustics are created.
Most of the church is occupied by tombstones, this is due to the fact that Oude Kerk is located in the cemetery. The number of buried citizens exceeded 10 thousand people, including famous figures of Amsterdam.
