Oudekerksplein, 1012 GX Amsterdam, Netherlands

Description:

The Church of Audekerk, whose name in Dutch means Old Church, is the oldest building of the capital of the Netherlands Amsterdam, preserved to this day.

Audekerk Church is located in the De Wallen area, which today is considered the spicy Red Lanterns quarter of Amsterdam. The area of the church covers an area of 3300 square meters, it is built on an artificial mound, which was required for construction on this marshy area. The extensions that have appeared over the centuries, today form the form of a cross in the plan of the church. The roof of the church is wooden, it is considered the largest vaulted wooden roof of European buildings, and the bell tower reaches a height of 67 meters.

An interesting fact is that the church was built on the site of the cemetery. Burials were held here until the middle of the XIX century, so the entire floor of the church is formed from tombstones. There are more than 2.5 thousand graves, among which are the burials of prominent citizens of Amsterdam and Holland. Audekerk was Rembrandt's "home" church, where he baptized his children and attended Sunday service. Today, you can not only listen to the sounds of the organ, but also rent a room for solemn events, presentations, receptions.
