Niuwe Kerk Church

Burgwallen Nieuwe Zijde

Description:

The main church of the Netherlands. It is famous for the fact that it is here that the coronation ceremony of monarchs of this country and royal weddings take place. The last coronation took place in 1980, when the current Queen Beatrix ascended the throne. There are no regular services in the church, but it is open to tourists.

Niuwe Kerk ("New Church") was built in the XIV century on the money of urban merchants, when Aude Kerk ("Old Church") ceased to accommodate all parishioners. The builders of Niuve Kirk tried to make the new church better and more beautiful than the old one. At the beginning of the XV century, the church suffered from fires several times, and in 1645 it almost completely burned down. Then it was restored in the Gothic style. At the beginning of the XX century, another reconstruction of the temple was carried out, and new details in the neo-Gothic style appeared in it.

Attractions of the church are the amazingly beautiful altar and carved ceiling above it, which miraculously survived the fire of 1645. Also noteworthy are the ancient organ of the middle of the XVII century, as well as windows with amazing stained glass windows.
