Monument to Queen Wilhelmina
Rokin, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Description:
The monument to Queen Wilhelmina is located on Rokin Street, Amsterdam. It was cast in bronze by the famous sculptor Theresia van der Pant. The statue was erected in 1972 at the expense of local residents at the initiative of one of the city’s women’s organizations. Initially, it was planned to depict the queen sitting at the microphone and addressing the people, but the experienced sculptor was not enthusiastic about this idea, so they decided to give the monument the appearance of a young queen, proudly riding a horse. At first, the monument was planned to be erected on Damrak Street, but since the sculpture was slightly larger than expected, the site was revised.
Near the monument there are several small flower beds - they are always well-groomed and delight the eyes of tourists. On the pedestal is preserved the inscription "WILHELMINA, 1880-1962", which symbolizes the years of the Queen's life, and next to it is engraved a small certificate stating that Wilhelmina was the reigning Queen of the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948, and then became a princess.
