Het Loo Castle
Koninklijk Park 1, 7315 Apeldoorn Noord
Description:
Built in the late seventeenth century, the castle has long served as the summer residence of the royal family. The appearance and decoration of the palace is deliberately modest, but the surrounding garden amazes with its beauty and correct geometric shapes.
The garden is a real pearl of the garden and palace ensembles of Europe. It is often referred to as "Peterhof in Dutch" or "Dutch Versailles". Its appearance has had a significant impact on the development of landscape art around the world.
The garden was created within the framework of a general formula: perfect symmetry, an axis scheme, from which, like spokes in a wheel, alleys with fountains, flower beds, reservoirs and sculptures diverge. Around the perimeter of the garden there are tubs with a large collection of various types of citrus trees, which are on display from May to October. Their inflorescences and fruits are symbols of the House of Orange. Two beautiful fountains depicting the globe and the celestial sphere are located symmetrically along the main axis of the garden.
