Muderslot Castle

Herengracht 1, 1398 AA Muiden

Description:

One of the best preserved and restored medieval castles in the Netherlands. The first mention of it dates back to 1280. At that time, the castle was small and was a place for collecting taxes from merchant boats going to the important shopping center of Utrecht.

In the XVII century, the famous Dutch historian, writer and poet Peter Cornelius Hoft settled in the castle. He organized all sorts of festivities in Muederslot for high society and the creative elite: theatrical performances, balls, dinners.

At the end of the XVIII century, the castle was used as a prison, and later as a barracks. No one was concerned about the safety of the castle and as a result it came to the most deplorable state. It was even going to be put up for auction with the right of subsequent destruction, and only the personal intervention of the king did not allow to destroy this valuable architectural monument.

Today in the castle is a branch of the State Museum. Inside the castle recreated the interiors of the Middle Ages: paintings, tapestries, furniture, utensils, weapons. In it you can try on medieval clothes and even repel an enemy attack on the walls of the castle.

There is also a nursery with falcons, eagles and owls. Often in the courtyard of the castle, a free show is arranged for visitors with their participation.
