State Art Museum of Amsterdam

Jan Luijkenstraat 1 1

About the company:

Art Museum in Amsterdam, the largest not only in the city, but also in the country. It was founded in 1808 by the brother of Napoleon I, King Louis Bonaparte of Holland. Opened for public visit in 1815. The building in which the museum is now located was built in 1877-1885 by the famous architect Peter Capers. He also worked on the building of the city station, and there are often similarities between the two buildings. Both buildings are valuable architectural monuments and sights of Amsterdam.

Until 2013, the art museum is undergoing extensive restoration. Parts of the exhibition are located in other museums.

The museum has an art collection (paintings, sculptures and decorative arts, art of Asian countries), a historical collection (archaeological artifacts, paintings, sculptures, clothes) and a collection of drawings, engravings and photographs.

The basis of the art collection are numerous works by Dutch masters of the XV-XIX centuries, such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals, as well as de Hoch, Steen, Reisdal, van der Gelst, van Skorel and others.

The main place in the exhibition is given to the “Night Watch” by Rembrandt (the picture belongs to the city of Amsterdam, and the museum is in temporary storage). In 1906, the museum building was rebuilt to house this painting.
