Amsterdam Central Station

Description:

The Central Station building is one of the main architectural sights of Amsterdam. It was built in 1881-1889 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The authors of the project were architects Peter Capers and Adolf Leonard van Gendt. In 1885, Capers designed the State Museum in Amsterdam, very similar to Grand Central Station.

Construction on marshy Amsterdam soil was not easy. The base for the building of the Central station was three artificial islands. 8687 wooden piles were used to create the foundation.

The station is located between residential areas and the port. The station has 6 aprons and 15 railway tracks. All long-distance trains come here, the metro leaves, more than half of tram routes and many trolleybuses start.
