Gothic Church Grote Kerk

Kortenbos, The Hague Center

Description:

The Hague has many beautiful Gothic churches, including the famous Great Church – Grote Kerk, the most famous cathedral of the city. On its pediment there are coats of arms of the Knights of the Golden Fleece and the symbol of the city - a bell with the image of a stork.

In the form closest to the modern, the church was built in the XV century. Before that, in its place from the XIII century there was a wooden chapel dedicated to St. Jacob. Later it was replaced by a more reliable stone structure.

The Church of Grote Kerk is closely connected with the ruling family of Orange. Here, more than one heir to the royal throne was baptized, and royal marriage unions were crowned.

Today, the church is a popular tourist destination, where not only services are held, but also various cultural events, such as organ music evenings.
