Poelgeest Castle
Nederland, Zuid-Holland, Koudekerk aan den Rijn
Description:
Poelgeest Castle is located in the province of South Holland. These are partially preserved parts of a previously majestic and formidable castle. You can not call them ruins, since one of the towers, the foundation and the carriage yard is completely intact.
The castle was supposedly built in 1250. It was round and surrounded by a moat of water. Its first owner was Lord Poelgeest. During the feudal wars, the castle was partially destroyed, but the most severe damage it received during the Eighty Years' War, when the nobles of the Poelgeest family sided with the reformer William of Orange. In 1692, the dilapidated castle was sold, but even after the sale did not acquire its original appearance.
