Van Voorne Castle
Netherlands, South Holland, Oostuvorne.
Description:
The ruins of the castle of van Voorne are located in the vicinity of the city of Oostuvorne in the province of South Holland. The castle was built in the XV century, although its oldest part - donjon was built in the second half of the XII century. It is believed that the first owner of the castle was Floris van Voorne, from his name and the name of the castle.
The castle was very fortified, it was surrounded by a deep moat and a powerful fortress wall. The reason for this construction was the defensive task set by the owner of the castle. After some time, a chapel was also built on the territory of the castle.
But because of the problem with the fragile foundation, the castle van Voorne began to gradually collapse. In the XVII century, the ruins of the castle began to belong to the state. Part of the remaining ruins is presented as an exposition that can be seen and is a national monument.
