Paddenpoel Castle

Netherlands, South Holland, Leiden

Description:

In the city of Leiden in the province of South Holland in 1966 was made an amazing find. During the construction of the student dormitory workers came across a brick wall, which, as it turned out, belonged to the ancient castle of Paddenpoel. It is known that the castle was destroyed in 1393.

In the XV century, the land and ruins of the castle belonged to Count Bowden van Svieten, who allowed to build a monastery here. It turned out that the territory on which the hostel for students was built had the remains of buildings of several centuries, including the very first castle of Paddenpoel. Now near the building, in a small ditch you can see part of the castle wall, visible in the water.
