Erasmus Swan Bridge
Erasmusbrug, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Description:
Erasmus Bridge, or “Swan Bridge”, is a symbol of Rotterdam. It was built in the center of the city, on the river Meuse. The work of architect Ben van Berkel has an unusual design and recognizable outlines. The 802 meter long bridge was opened in 1996. Its southern part has a draw span, which is the heaviest and largest in Western Europe. It is also the longest drawbridge in the world.
This asymmetrical structure was named after Erasmus of Rotterdam, who made his city famous. The “swan” bridge became known due to its steel curved snow-white “neck” 139 meters long. "Erasm" combines 2 designs: hanging single-support and drawbridges. Despite its giant size, the Swan is one of the thinnest in the world, its thickness is just over 2 meters. This lightness, combined with a large load capacity, was made possible thanks to precise engineering calculations and the use of the latest materials - especially strong steel with impurities of chlorine and nickel.
Today Erasmus Bridge is a wonderful decoration of the city. In the evening, its support is beautifully illuminated with lights.
