Mathenesse Manor

Netherlands, South Holland, in the vicinity of the city of Schieedam.

Description:

The first mention of the Matheness manor dates back to 1276. The estate was located in an area located between the cities of Rotterdam and Schieedam. Presumably, the owner of the estate was Dirk Van Mathenesse, a famous Dutch nobleman. First he built a dam near the town of Schieedam, and then in the district began to build his estate.

Together with the lands that Dirk Van Mathenesse had built, he bought a small Riviera Castle, which was located in the city of Schiedam itself. The castle was founded in 1256. Over time, the castle began to be called by the name of the owner of the castle Matheness. The ruins of this castle can now be seen in the city of Schiedam.

The name of Mathenesse Castle and Manor can now be seen in the names of the residential and business districts of Rotherdam and Schiedam.
