Ravestain Castle

Netherlands, South Holland, Rotterdam, Heenvliet.

Description:

The ruins of Ravestain Castle are located in the historical part of Heenvliet, the Dutch city of Bernisse. It is believed that the first wooden fortress was built on this site in 1100. By 1254, the castle was already built in stone. The castle was a real impregnable fortress. 4 powerful towers, a moat around the castle, a grid protecting the entrance - all this said that the castle is fully ready for defense. Over time, it was slightly rebuilt and expanded, making it more convenient for living.

During the Dutch mutinies of 1582, the castle was destroyed, but its cellars were still strong and reliable and remained a prison for a long time.

In the sixties of the XX century, archaeological excavations were carried out, during which the remains of the castle were found. Partially the castle was restored, in the summer it is opened for display to tourists.
