Fort Feszio

Netherlands, Utrecht province, Bannik, Marsdijk 2

Description:

Fort Feszio is a Roman defense fortress located in the former German province of Lower Germany, now the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the province of Utrecht, the city of Bannik. The fort was built presumably in the IV or V century, in the place where the Vecht River branches from the Rhine and leads to Lake Flevo.

During the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius, Fort Feszio was part of the Upper German-Retian Limes, the eastern border of the empire, about 550 kilometers long.

In these places, archaeological excavations were carried out, in which the ruins of other fortresses, civil settlements and cemeteries were found in the place where the fort stands.

In 1995, the fort was awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is currently on the provisional list of the organization protecting cultural monuments of human history.
