Castle de Haar

Kasteellaan 1, 3455 RR Haarzuilens

Description:

The oldest and most modern castle in Holland. It was built in the XIV century, but later it was repeatedly rebuilt and destroyed. By the end of the XIX century for the restoration of the castle, which by that time was a ruin, took the famous architect Peter Capers.

Construction work lasted more than 20 years. Capers not only fully restored the facade of the building and the interior decoration, but also equipped the castle with an elevator, running water with hot and cold water, and central heating. He even created a dining set specifically for de Haar.

Around the castle there is a garden, which for its beauty is often called “little Versailles”. The owners of the castle wanted the garden to look centuries old, so the trees there were planted already large, over 40 years old. At night, they were dug up in nearby groves and carefully transported to de Haar.

It is said that the castle even has its own ghost. This is the ghost of Knight Conrad, who owned the castle in the Middle Ages. He drowned at the walls of his castle in the fortified moat and since then can not find peace.
