Geerestein Castle
Netherlands, Utrecht Province, Woodenberg, Geeresteinselaan Street
Description:
Geerestein Castle is an estate located in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the province of Utrecht, not far from the city of Woodenberg.
The castle was probably built between 1394 and 1402 by Jacob van Zuylen. After his death, the castle was taken over by his son Stephen. Beginning in 1478, Stephen and his brother Gerrit began to argue over the estate, and after several years of strife and betrayal, Gerrit still took possession of the castle, who rebuilt the estate in his own way. The castle building has remained unchanged since the reign of Gerrit, since 1546, only the facade and some details were subsequently reconstructed.
In 1834, the estate was acquired by Henry Hoft. After the purchase, he restored the facade of the building in the style of Dutch classicism, and knocked out his family coat of arms on the front of the building.
Now the estate is included in the register of historical monuments of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is used by private companies as offices.
