Grijstein Castle
Netherlands, Utrecht Province, Wood Municipality, Lange Uitweg 83
Description:
Grijstein Castle is a former fortified house, once located in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the province of Utrecht, the municipality of Wood.
According to historical data, the castle was built in 1381. Its first resident was the knight Otto van Asperen. In 1415, the castle, together with the estate of Grupenstein, passed into the possession of the community of Daaren. In 1438, the castle was bought by local judge Zweder van Richtern, and belonged to his family until 1536, when Johan van Haer, one of Richtern's grandchildren, mortgaged it on credit.
Until the XVIII century, no one lived in the castle, and then it was bought by Griber Stein, one of the knights of the famous Stein family in the Netherlands.
Descendants of the Stein family still own the land where the castle once stood. Now in its place is a farm, and the castle itself was rebuilt as an estate, but in a more modern way.
