Groenenwood Castle

Netherlands, Utrecht province, Woodenberg, Ekris 42A

Description:

Groenenwood is a former castle located in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the province of Utrecht, the city of Woodenberg.

The castle was built in 1383, and was originally a fortified house, serving to protect against the raids of the Frisians. The castle was considered the residence of Marshal Imland. In the following years, when the military situation in the province subsided, a village began to revive around the castle, which soon grew into a city. Consequently, the defensive role of the castle faded into the background.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle was home to several aristocratic families. Beginning in 1859, the castle gradually began to be destroyed and was soon demolished. Today, the area around the former castle is included in the list of historical monuments of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
