Ljsselstein Castle

Netherlands, Utrecht, Kronenburgplantsoen 9, 3401 BM IJsselstein.

Description:

Ljsselstein is a castle located in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht in the center of the village of the same name. The first mention of it is found in the documents of 1144.

The building appeared after Gidgsbrecht Ljsselstein received approval from Bishop Jacob of Bavaria to build the castle. The most famous inhabitants were representatives of the genus Van Amstel, who called themselves Van Ljsselstein.

It was a magnificent structure with two rectangular towers and a tiled roof. The impressive size of the castle on all sides surrounded the canal, through which several suspension bridges passed.

In 1297, the siege of Ljsselstein began, which lasted a year. In 1511, the castle lost its former functions and appearance, which led to the fact that in 1700 it was demolished. Only the main tower has survived to this day.
