Ter Horst Castle

Netherlands, Achterberg, Utrecht, De Dijk 76

Description:

Ter Horst is a former castle in the Dutch city of Achterberg, Rennen municipality, Utrecht province. Once, the castle was the border fortress of Bishop Utrecht, he defended the diocese by Gelred.

Most likely, on the site of the stone castle, built by Bishop Godfried van Rennen, there was once an old wooden, fortified palisade house, burned, most likely in 1163.

In the XV century, in connection with the cessation of hostilities in the city and the bishopric, the castle lost its former purpose, and it was decided to demolish.

In 1942, excavations were carried out on the site of the former Ter Horst Castle, during which parts of the foundation and the remains of large towers of the once majestic fortress were discovered.
