Description:
Vredenburg is a castle located in the Netherlands, in Utrecht. It is an architectural monument, despite the fact that today only ruins remain from it.
The construction of the building took place on the territory of the former hospital in 1529-1532. The first architect was Rombot II Keldemans. His task was to build a solid structure in order to protect Duke Charles from the discontented citizens of the local bourgeoisie. In 1531, after the death of the first architect, Lawrence II Keldemans took up the work. By 1532, the castle was almost complete. In 1534, two large western towers were added.
It was a magnificent building with outbuildings. It took up a lot of territory. At the corners of the rectangular building stood four towers, the main entrance was also made in the form of a high tower, which can only be reached through a suspension bridge. The castle was surrounded by a large moat.
The foundations of Vredenburg were discovered during excavations in 1976 and 1978. Part of the foundation has been preserved to this day.
