Baltite
Description:
Baltit Fort is one of the many architectural sights of the Pakistani city of Karimbad. The fortress was built to control seasonal trade between South and Central Asia. Fort Baltit is a three-storey structure with a rectangular base. On the ground floor there were warehouses with ammunition, weapons, food and clothing. On the second was a viewing point for the observation of enemy troops, as well as a dining room and rest rooms. On the third floor of Fort Baltit there were apartments for receiving foreign delegations.
The beginning of the construction of the fort belongs to the middle of the VIII century. At its main wall there were 5 bastions, in the western wing there was a stone tower, and from the east to it two stone defensive structures connected with each other by a passage where there were storage chambers. The thickness of the walls of the building reached 6 meters, at that time it was considered impregnable. Since the fortress was located in a region of frequent earthquakes, its stone walls were further reinforced with timber supports.
Since 1996, a historical museum has been located on the territory of the fort.
