Colca Canyon

Cayoma Province 148 km northeast of Arequipa

Description:

The name Kolka came from the Quechua language and means "grain barn". According to scientists, the canyon formed the course of the river of the same name with it, which allowed the ancient Peruvian peoples to actively engage in agriculture. Hence the numerous agricultural step terraces - andenese, which you can see today.

The length of this mountain system is about 100 kilometers. Kolka is surrounded by high volcanoes, whose height exceeds 6 thousand meters. Do not be afraid of them, because they have long been asleep. The depth of the canyon is from 1000 to 3000 meters. Kolka is the second deepest canyon in the world (the first place is occupied by Kotuashi, which is very close).

One of the most famous places in the Kolka River Valley is the Condor Cross. Here at a fairly close distance you can see the flights of condors through the canyon. The canyon is the natural habitat of the Andean condor.
