Misty Volcano
volcano Misti, near the city of Arequipa, Peru
Description:
El Misti is an active volcano located near Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa. The Chilean River, flowing through the city, goes into a canyon between El Misti and the ancient Chachani volcanic complex located to the north.
The volcano is interesting not only from a geological point of view as an active volcano. But the fact that next to one of the three craters were found mummies of the Incas and several artifacts. The finds are kept in the Museum of the Andean Sanctuaries (Museo de Santuarios Andinos) in Arequipa.
Climbing El Misti is possible at any time of the year, although in winter, especially in December and January, it is hampered by low temperatures and poor visibility. Although the last eruption was mild and occurred in 1985, the realization that the volcano is active can give the ascent a special chic and fill the veins with adrenaline.
