Silwish Castle
Rua do Castelo, 8300-117 Silves, Portugal
Description:
Located in southern Portugal, Silviš has a rich history. Its strategic location contributed to the establishment of a fortified settlement on this site.
The first fortress was built here by the Romans, but the period of greatest prosperity came in the years when Silvish became the Moorish capital. The beauty of this city was admired by many Arab thinkers and poets. The cultural capital of the Arab possession of Al-Gharb was Silves until it was captured by the Knights of the Order of Santiago in 1242.
The main attraction of Silviš is a beautiful castle, the construction of which was carried out in the VIII-XIII centuries. The walls are made of red sandstone, and look very expressive against the background of the blue sky, besides they are allowed to climb tourists.
Inside the castle there are many observation platforms, from which magnificent panoramas of the city and its surroundings open. And in the basement there are huge water tanks built in the XI century to provide the castle with water in case of a long siege.
