Bohm Jesus de Monte Church
Estrada do Bom Jesus, 4820-142 Braga, Portugal
Description:
The sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Monte, whose name in Portuguese means "the sanctuary of Christ on Calvary", is located a few kilometers from the historical center of Braga. This amazing landscape complex has become a famous place of pilgrimage and the inspiration of architects who created similar structures not only in Portugal, but also in Brazil.
The history of the sanctuary dates back to the beginning of the XIV century, when a cross was erected on the top of the Espinho hill, and in 1373 a chapel of the Cross was erected on one of the slopes, and hundreds of pilgrims began to flock here both from Braga and from the nearby regions.
Two more chapels were built in 1494 and 1522, and in 1629 a religious association called the Brotherhood of Bon Jesus de Monte was created. After that, for another hundred years on the hillsides, a winding path was arranged with miniature chapels around the edges, made in the form of small grottoes depicting biblical scenes inside.
In the XVIII century, the construction of a grand staircase began, which became a real pearl of the Holy Mountain. It rises to a height of 116 meters and consists of three large ornate sculptures and fountains spans. It is best to climb the stairs on foot - the only way you can feel all its beauty - gradually, step by step, opening magnificent views, like "secrets".
