Évora

St. Francis Church

Praca 1 de Maio, Evora, Portugal

Description:

The Church of St. Francis in the city of Evora in the east of Portugal was built on the site of the monastery of the Franciscan order founded here in the 13th century. Reconstruction of the monastery began in 1475 and was a combination of Gothic style and Manueline style (characteristic of Portugal 15-16 centuries). By 1550, the result of the reconstruction was the church as we see it today.

Particularly famous Church of St. Francis brought the fact that for the decoration of one of the chapels (chapels) monks used more than 5,000 human skeletons collected from the cemeteries of churches and monasteries of medieval Évora, seeking both to partially solve the current problem in Portugal with the lack of places for burial, and to show the frailty of existence and inevitable death awaiting anyone living today. The bones and skulls completely cover the walls and central pillars of the chapel, and the inscription above the entrance reads: "Our bones lying here await your bones."
