University of Evora
Largo dos Colegiais 2, 7004-516 & #201 vora, Portugal
Description:
In the heyday of the city, when it was a favorite place of kings, a university was founded in the city. This happened in 1551. The founder of the university was the Jesuit Order. Many great Portuguese and European masters gained their knowledge at the University of Évora. Literally from all corners of Europe, poets and artists sought inspiration in this small town, and the greatest scientists of that time came to the local university.
In the eighteenth century, however, Évora’s political and economic importance declined sharply. In 1756, a sad event occurred in the life of the university - it was closed, and the Jesuits were expelled from the country. This happened under the Marquis de Pombal, who, due to serious disagreements, did not share with them zones of influence in the country. But the history of the university did not end there, and a significant event occurred in the XIX century - it was the surrender of King Miguel in 1832. This event symbolized the end of the civil wars in Portugal. It was not until 1973 that the University was reopened.
