Cathedral "Funschal"

Rua do Aljube 13 9000-067 Funchal, Portugal

Description:

Funchal Cathedral is a Catholic church, which is one of the few buildings that have survived in its original form since colonization. It is located on the island of Madeira. In the 90s of the XV century, the architect Manuel Gil Enis began to work on the design of the Cathedral of Funchal and completed the work in 1514. But the spire of the bell tower and some details were completed in 1517-1518 by the architect Pedro Anes.

This cathedral is a Gothic building, inside which you can see the ceilings made of wood, the Flemish choir and the bishop's chair, the Gothic style of the main door and gilded wood products typical of the Manueline style. The exhibited saints, prophets and apostles are dressed in sixteenth-century costumes. The altar, one of the few altars of the seventeenth century that has not been damaged, shows an elegant openwork canopy of thin boards, painted with scenes from the Old and New Testament, whose authorship is attributed to Master Lauren.

In the cathedral there is a significant cross for religious processions, presented by Manuel I. This instrument of worship made of silver is rightfully considered one of the masterpieces of jewelry art.
