Santa Maria Street is located in Funchal, which is located on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Located in the old part of the city, the narrow pedestrian street is one of Funchal’s most interesting sights. There are many outdoor cafes, bars and souvenir shops.
The first mention of the street dates back to 1430. Now the unique charm of antiquity and the creative spirit of modernity are intertwined here. The restored facades of two- and three-storey buildings are harmoniously combined with cobbled sidewalks and small architectural forms.
In 2010, the street became the venue for the Art of Open Doors art project, during which the doors of houses on the street were painted by local artists.
