Batalha Monastery

Portugal, County of Leiria, City of Batalha

Description:

Batalha Monastery is located in the Portuguese city of the same name, which is located in the district of Leiria. The architecture of the monastery is a mixture of late Gothic and Manueline style.

The construction of the monastery began in 1385 by the Portuguese king João I in gratitude for the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota.

The monastery was completed only in 1517, becoming the tomb of six Portuguese monarchs. In 1755, the monastery suffered from an earthquake, but the greatest destruction overtook the monastery during the Napoleonic Wars, when in 1811 it was looted and burned.

From 1840 to 1907, the monastery was restored by order of King Ferdinand II.

Currently, the National Museum of Portugal is located in the buildings of the monastery. The complex of buildings is included in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On the territory of the monastery there is a memorial grave of unknown soldiers who died in the First World War.
