Description:

Obidos Castle is one of the most famous and popular historical and architectural monuments erected in the Manueline style. It is impossible to pass by if you want to plunge into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

The most interesting details for tourists are the preserved bastions and jagged walls. In addition, in some places in the castle, authentic windows and arched passages decorated with medieval bas-reliefs have survived.

The appearance of the castle is eclectic, because many nationalities contributed to its creation. Such architectural and decorative diversity was manifested as a result of wars and conquests, numerous reconstructions. The very first here were the Romans, who built baths on the site of the castle. After them came the West Goths, who built the fortress itself, around which the settlement later grew. The Arabs who seized power completely fenced it with fortress walls. The castle acquired its final appearance immediately after the Arab emirates became part of Portugal.

Nowadays, the Medieval Fair is regularly held in Obidush. And it is also called the "City of weddings", because every year from all over the world, newlyweds come here to spend their honeymoon.
