Monsanto – Lost among the boulders
Description:
I invite you to visit the historic village of Monsanto, lost in central Portugal, which is hidden under huge granite boulders. The highest point of the settlement is located at an altitude of 758 meters. The village is home to only 829 people, but Monsanto is visited daily by hundreds of tourists, attracted by the unusual, distinctive appearance of the village.
In 1938, Monsanto was recognized as “the most Portuguese village in Portugal”, where stones are born from houses or houses from stones.
It is advisable to travel early, at 7:30 am, because Monsatu is located at a distance of 300 km southeast of Porto, which by car will take 3 hours 20 minutes.
Wandering through the narrow streets of Monsanta (they are supposedly carved between boulders, and houses are sandwiched between rocky ledges), we will climb to the very top of the mountain, where in the 12th century the Templars built an uncriminal fortress. Over the past eight centuries, the relief has changed little.
The tour is part of a tour of cultural and historical villages.
