Fort San Felipe

Estrada do Forte de S. Filipe, Setú bal, Portugal

Description:

Forte de Sã o Filipe, or Fort El Moro de San Felipe, was built under the Spanish King Felipe II in the 16th century. There is a fortress in the city of Puerto Plata. The fort served as a defense against French and English pirates. The fortress has been changed and strengthened many times, now it has been restored, and its architecture combines elements of different styles. The coral ditch around the fort has been preserved in its original form.

The stone structure of the fortress with very thick walls also served as a prison for political dissidents. Currently, there is a Historical Museum with exhibits of the 18th century: there are collections of weapons and antique coins. On the roof there is an observation deck, from which an overview of the city and the sea opens. On the territory of the fort is a fashionable Portuguese hotel chain Pousada.
