Ardatov is one of the oldest cities in Mordovia. It is famous for its original history, people who were born and work on the land of Ardatov. You can get acquainted with the past and present of the region in the Ardatov Museum of Local History.
In 1975, the museum was located in the former home of Doctor of Historical Sciences, historian of law M. N. Gernet. In 1990 he moved to the first stone two-storey building, built in 1781.
The museum has over 21,000 monuments of history and culture of the Mordovian region. The thematic structure of the exhibition halls is based on the principle of historical and chronological display: the primitive communal system and the medieval era, the region in the XVIII-XIX centuries, modern history.
