Founded in 1915, the city since 1937. Population 78,500 (2006). Station on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 75 km from the border with China. Birobidzhan is named after the two largest rivers of the Jewish Autonomous Region - Bira and Bijan. Birobidzhan itself stands on the banks of Bira. Bijan flows parallel to Bire to the west of the city (about 100 km) and flows into the Amur, like Bira. It arose as a settlement at Tikhonkaya station (opened in 1915), which in 1928 was transformed into a working village Tikhonkaya - Station. In 1932, it was renamed Birobidzhan after the name of the area Birobidzhan: this was the name of the space between the rivers Bira (Evenki River) and Bijan (Evenki Bigen).
