Dormition Cathedral

p. Historical, 10, Dmitrov, Moscow region, Russia

Description:

Construction of the cathedral began in 1507. As for the exact time of completion of the building, historians have not yet come to a consensus, but most often called 1512. The Assumption Cathedral was built on the initiative of Prince Yuri Ivanovich Dmitrovsky, who allocated his personal funds for the implementation of this idea. The influence of the Italian style in the architecture of the Cathedral is obvious - for example, windows-lucarna or decoration of the walls of the facade with panels. Historians allow the participation of Italian masters in the construction, as the father of Yuri Ivanovich, Ivan III, repeatedly invited architects and workers from Italy.

For several centuries, the architecture of the Assumption Cathedral underwent changes and restoration. At the end of the XIX century the bell towers were rebuilt in the style of classicism. After the revolution, the bells and spires were destroyed and restored again in the early sixties. Within the walls of the Cathedral there is a carved iconostasis of the XVII century, whose icons were painted by the masters of the Armory. Preserved and wall painting, made in the early XIX century.
