The museum was opened in 1918 on the initiative of the local intelligentsia and the district zemstvo. The first was headed by M.N. Tikhomirov later known scientist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Assistance in the creation of the museum was provided by P.A. Kropotkin, geographer, historian, philosopher, whose last years of life were spent in Dmitrov. The museum collection was formed in the 1920s from objects collected in ethnographic expeditions, works of fine, decorative and applied, temple and folk art, as well as objects of manor life. The collections and expositions of the museum contain unique documents, film and photographic materials. The inspection of the exposition begins on the territory of the Dmitrov Kremlin, surrounded by an earthen rampart - a monument of defense architecture of the XII-XVI centuries. In the buildings of the Public Assembly and the Treasury there is a Historical and Art Department, which includes two independent expositions. Exhibition of art collections (Historical square, house 18). The art collection of the Dmitrov Museum is one of the most interesting in the Moscow region. The department is located in the building of public meetings. In its halls there are collections of church, decorative and applied art, Russian and Western European painting of the 18-19 centuries, art of the twentieth century and products of artistic folk crafts.
