Historical information about the city of Gatchina

Gatchina is one of the most famous historical cities of the Leningrad region, located about 45 km southwest of St. Petersburg. Today it is known as a former imperial residence, a major cultural center and a city with a rich architectural heritage. The history of Gatchina is closely connected with Russian emperors, palace coups, military reforms and events of the XX century.

Early period: before the foundation of the city

Before the appearance of Gatchina, this area was covered with dense forests, swamps and lakes. Archaeological evidence suggests that in ancient times there lived Finno-Ugric tribes – Vod, Izhora and other peoples of the North-West.

In the XIII-XV centuries, these lands were part of the Novgorod land. The area was of strategic importance due to its proximity to trade routes and forest resources.

During the Russian-Swedish conflicts of the XVI-XVII centuries, the territory repeatedly passed under the control of Sweden.

After the Treaty of Stolbov in 1617, part of Ingermanland, including the surroundings of modern Gatchina, came under Swedish rule.

The foundation of Gatchina

The first written mention of the settlement dates back to 1499. Then it appeared as the village of Hotchino (Hochino) in the scribe books of the Novgorod land.

After the Northern War (1700–1721), Peter I returned these lands to Russia.

At the beginning of the XVIII century, the territory was actively developed. Here there were estates, hunting grounds and small noble possessions.

Epoch of Catherine II and Count Orlov

The real development of Gatchina began in the second half of the XVIII century.

In 1765, Empress Catherine II presented the Gatchina manor to her favorite and colleague, Count Grigory Orlov, one of the participants in the palace coup of 1762.

Orlov was a passionate hunter and decided to turn the area into a luxurious manor.

It is with him that the construction of the main attraction of the city begins - the Grand Gatchina Palace.

The construction was carried out in 1766-1781 by the Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi.

The palace was distinguished by unusual architecture: it combined the features of a Russian palace, a medieval castle and an English hunting estate.

Around the palace were created parks, lakes, artificial islands and pavilions.

After the death of Orlov in 1783, the estate was bought by Catherine II.

Paul I and the transformation of Gatchina into an imperial residence

In 1783, Catherine II gave Gatchina to her son, the future Emperor Paul I.

This was one of the most important stages in the history of the city.

Paul loved Gatchina very much and actually turned it into his personal capital.

Under Paul I it happened:

  • large-scale expansion of the palace complex;

  • construction of parade ground, barracks and fortifications;

  • Establishment of regular parks;

  • the appearance of new bridges, gates and towers;

  • Development of roads and administrative buildings.

Paul was fond of the Prussian military system and conducted military experiments there.

It was in Gatchina that the famous "Gatchin troops" appeared - exemplary units, on which later military reforms of the Russian army were based.

In 1796, after the accession of Paul I to the throne, Gatchina received the official status of a city.

XIX century: the flourishing of the city

After the death of Paul I, Gatchina retained the importance of the imperial residence.

The city developed especially actively under Nicholas I, Alexander II and Alexander III.

What has changed in the nineteenth century:

  • crafts and trade developed;

  • Hospitals, schools, barracks were built;

  • Railway tracks have appeared;

  • population growth;

  • Orthodox churches were built;

  • Industry was growing.

Alexander III and Gatchina

After the assassination of Alexander II in 1881, Emperor Alexander III moved to the Gatchina Palace for security reasons.

From 1881 to 1894, Gatchina became one of the main political residences of the Russian Empire.

It was here that state decisions were made, diplomatic meetings were held and representatives of the imperial family lived.

During this time, the city received the nickname “the citadel of the autocracy”.

Scientific and technical developments

Gatchina is also associated with the development of science.

In the late XIX - early XX century, experiments in the field of technology and communication were actively conducted here.

Major developments:

  • one of the first Russian military airfields;

  • early aviation testing;

  • development of radio communication;

  • engineering developments;

  • Experiments with underwater equipment.

In 1910, the Gatchina military airfield was created near the city, which became an important center of Russian aviation.

The Revolution and the Soviet Period

After the 1917 revolution, the imperial era ended.

The palace was nationalized and turned into a museum.

In 1923, the city was temporarily renamed Trotsky in honor of Leon Trotsky.

After its political fall in 1929, the city regained its historical name - Gatchina.

In Soviet times, the city developed as an industrial, scientific and military center.

The Great Patriotic War

One of the most tragic periods in the history of the city was the Second World War.

From September 1941 to January 1944, Gatchina was under German occupation.

The invaders renamed it Lindemanstadt.

The city was hit hard:

  • Palaces destroyed;

  • museums destroyed;

  • Buildings burned;

  • parks damaged;

  • A large number of civilians were killed.

During the retreat, German troops set fire to the Gatchina Palace.

Post-war reconstruction

After the war, a large-scale reconstruction began.

The restoration of the palace and parks took decades.

The city developed:

  • engineering;

  • defense industry;

  • scientific institutions;

  • educational institutions.

Modern Gatchina

Today Gatchina is the administrative center of Gatchina district and one of the largest cities of Leningrad region.

She's known:

  • The Grand Gatchina Palace;

  • Palace Park;

  • The Priory Palace;

  • underpass of the palace;
