Priorate Palace
ooh Chkalova, Gatchina, Leningrad region, Russia, 188300
Description:
Priorat Castle is known largely due to its unique earth-bit construction technology - pressed layers of clay are impregnated with lime mortar, forming a durable and convenient building material for thermal insulation. To date, this is the only earth-beaten building in Russia that has survived to this day. The Priorate Palace was built at the end of the 18th century under the leadership of the architect Nikolai Alexandrovich Lvov, who by that time had experience in such construction.
The Priory itself and the adjacent park are located on the shore of the Black Lake. The style of construction largely gravitates to classicism, and the outlines of the Priorate resemble the Catholic monasteries of the Middle Ages. The retaining wall of Pudost stone gives it some resemblance to the fortress. The architectural solution is also characterized by the rejection of symmetry, which gives each viewpoint its uniqueness.
