Hanging bridge over the Katun River
m52 highway, Altai Republic, Russia
Description:
The Hanging Bridge over the Katun River has been an architectural monument since 1976.
It is an object of cultural heritage of Russia and is located near the village of Inya in the Altai Republic. It was built in 1936 according to the project of S.A. Tsaplin, using the working hands of prisoners of the local branch of Siblag NKVD. The bridge was built by hand, both day and night.
During the conflict with Japan, it became a strategically important site. Its full length is one hundred and forty-two meters, and the distance to the water is one hundred meters. The bridge has reinforced concrete pylons, but its rest is wooden. Despite this, being tested, the bridge was able to withstand six ZIS vehicles, which were laden with six to eight tons each. When a new bridge was built nearby, this one stopped being used.
